Other Workstations require a headset (earphones and microphone)

      Scholastic Media Accelerator (SMA)

Where necessary to lessen network congestion, Scholastic may recommend installing the Scholastic Media Accelerator (SMA), a software application used to set up a specialized media server within a district to deliver the rich media assets (Audio, Video, and Animations). The SMA improves overall performance by moving these large files closer to the end user, thereby reducing bandwidth contention with other programs which may be using the district's Internet connection. One or more SMAs may be installed depending on the size of the district and number of concurrent users expected. The SMA software can be installed in a Macintosh, Windows, or Linux computer. Please contact Scholastic Technical Services to discuss your implementation.

      Deployment Options

System 44 Next Generation is a browser application where the server may be hosted by the district ("Local" Installation) or by Scholastic from its data center ("Hosted" Deployment).

Local Installation: The server computer housing SAM and the program software is located at the district and/or school. Workstations connect with the local server over a Local or Wide-Area network.

Hosted Deployment: Scholastic data center houses the program's server software. District/school workstations use a connection secured by SSL to connect to the hosted server, so there are no school or district servers to purchase or maintain. However, for most districts, Scholastic recommends that media be hosted locally on an SMA inside the district firewall to reduce network congestion.

To determine which deployment option is right for you, please contact Scholastic Technical Services to discuss your deployment.

      Bandwidth

Scholastic recommends 100kbps of available bandwidth per active workstation to operate System 44 Next Generation successfully.

      Concurrency

A Quad Core Xeon server with 16GB of RAM operating over a high-speed network can manage up to 750 concurrent user sessions. The number you will be able to manage may be lower depending on many factors such as available bandwidth, firewall settings, content filtering, and other network factors. Please contact Scholastic Technical Services to discuss your implementation.

During Whole-Group, System 44 students work with their peers in the rBook to build background and engage in conversation with a text that is a stretch for them. Small-Group differentiated instruction allows teachers to work with System 44 students using their rBook-aligned 44Books to teach phonics, reading comprehension, and writing skills in nine content-area Workshops.

      • What changes were made to the student libraries?

The student libraries include 20 new titles for both the Upper Elementary and Secondary libraries. A new Paperback library bookshelf has been created to accommodate the complete collection. *Included in Year 1. Included with Premium Product Support or Hosting for Year 2 and beyond.

      • What changes were made to the System 44 Student Software?

System 44 Next Generation Student Software includes several new activities. A dictation activity in the Fluency Zone of the Code provides students with the opportunity to apply decoding skills while building writing fluency. A new Cloze activity in the Success Strand supports the application of comprehension and vocabulary skills. In the all new Writing Strand, students engage in independent practice in writing evidence-based summaries tied to Software content, with scaffolds that reinforce teacher-led practice in the 44Book. In addition, a newly designed, highly-motivating Student Dashboard makes it even easier for students to track their progress through the program.

      • What additions have been made for teachers?

The New 44Book Teacher’s Edition provides a clear, daily instructional path for teachers during Small-Group differentiated instruction. With the 44Book, teachers deliver direct Common Core aligned instruction in phonics, decoding, reading, and writing.

System 44 Next Generation includes many new state-of-the-art tools for educators. The all new Teacher Dashboard helps build capacity of effective teachers. Accessible anywhere an Internet connection is available, the Teacher Dashboard highlights the most important implementation and student performance data and allows teachers to use the data to plan and differentiated instruction. A dynamic grouping tool called the Groupinator™ automatically recommends specific skill instruction and point-of-use resources based on student data. The Teacher Dashboard also includes on-demand videos and resources, Common Core State Standards-aligned lesson plans, and a Report Scheduler to make planning and instruction easy and effective.

Enhancements to the SAM Student Digital Portfolio (SDP) allow teachers to set and adjust academic and behavioral goals, and the new Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) on the Teacher Dashboard helps teachers see how an individual student is tracking toward these goals.

In addition, all of the contents of the previous 44Book Teaching Guide are now available in the new Resources for Differentiated Instruction (RDI), with additional research and professional development resources to support the System 44 Next Generation classroom, including resources for implementing Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

The Screening, Assessment, and Reporting Guide (SARG) has been updated to include Next Generation reporting and assessment resources.

      • What additions have been made for leaders?

The new Leadership Dashboard provides transparency to the implementation and performance data that matters most, helping leaders maximize the effectiveness of their System 44 teachers.

      • What are the technology recommendations for System 44 Next Generation?

For a complete list of technology recommendations for System 44 Next Generation, please click here.

      • What is SAM v2.2, and how does it affect System 44 Next Generation?

SAM v2.2 is the management system for System 44 Next Generation and is required to run System 44 Next Generation.

SAM v2.2 enables all Scholastic technology programs to access applications and media through a browser. The browser can access applications and media from your district's server or from the Scholastic Data Center via the Internet if you have purchased Scholastic Hosting Services.

      • When I upgrade to System 44 Next Generation, will my System 44 Enterprise Edition data migrate?

Yes. All System 44 Enterprise Edition data will migrate to System 44 Next Generation,

      • Where will my System 44 files reside?

Whether System 44 Next Generation is deployed as a local installation in the district or is hosted by Scholastic, we recommend that the media is installed at the school or district for optimal performance.

Where necessary to improve performance and reduce network congestion, Scholastic will recommend installing the Scholastic Media Accelerator (SMA), a software application used to set up a specialized media server within a district to deliver the rich media assets (audio, video, and animations). The SMA improves overall performance by moving these large files closer to the student, thereby reducing bandwidth contention with other programs that may be using the district's Internet connection. One or more SMAs may be installed depending on the size of the district and number of concurrent users expected. The SMA software can be installed in a Macintosh, Windows, or Linux computer.

      • What are my options to deploy System 44 Next Generation?

System 44 Next Generation is a browser application where the server may be hosted by the district ("Local" Installation) or by Scholastic from its data center ("Hosted" Deployment) for a fee.

        • Local Installation: The server computer housing SAM and the program software is located at the district and/or school. Workstations connect with the local server over a Local or Wide-Area network.
        • Hosted Deployment: A Scholastic data center houses the program's server software. District/school workstations use a connection secured by SSL to connect to the hosted server, so there are no school or district servers to purchase or maintain. However, for most districts, Scholastic recommends that media be hosted locally on an SMA inside the district firewall to reduce network congestion.
      • What if I have specific questions about my implementation? Who can I contact for technical support?
